The RYA Competent Crew Course is your entry point into the exciting world of sailing, whether you’re a complete beginner or have some experience with dinghies or keelboats.

What Will You Learn?

This course is all about hands-on experience. You’ll steer a catamaran, handle sails, and learn essential skills such as using winches, navigating different wind conditions, and understanding boat rigging. Safety is a top priority, so you’ll practice man-overboard recovery and other critical techniques. The course also introduces you to weather forecasting, sailing rules, and life onboard. One highlight is the unforgettable experience of a night sail under the stars. Along the way, you’ll visit scenic ports and anchorages, soaking in the beauty of the coastline.

A Typical 5-Day Course

Your adventure starts at 9 AM with a welcome aboard and a safety briefing from your instructor. After getting familiar with the boat, you’ll head out to explore the stunning waters of Geographe Bay. Potential destinations include Quindalup, MeelupBunker Bay, and even Koombana Bay in Bunbury. Midday breaks could be spent anchored in quiet bays, perfect for a meal or a swim. Evenings are equally varied, with options to dock at marinas, anchor in peaceful bays, or enjoy the serenity of the open water. One of the highlights is the night sail, where you’ll navigate under moonlight and stars.

What’s Included?

By the end of the course, you’ll leave with more than just memories:

  • RYA Logbook
  • RYA Competent Crew Certificate, confirming your readiness to join any sailing crew
